Nicolas Sarkozy was elected president of France on Sunday. The right-winger is from the same party as the outgoing president, Jacques Chirac, but unlike Mr. Chirac Sarkozy has made much of his desire to be a close ally of the United States.
Of course, being French and all, Mr. Sarkozy's conservative and pro-American credentials are not as firm as some in the US may wish. He's been very critical of the Bush administration's stance on global warming, for example, and opposed the Iraq war. Plus he is strongly opposed to illegal immigration, which is more than we can say of the Republican Party, har har har.
